A day in the life of an Assistant Systems Accountant at an international bank | Month-end (Part 2)

8:50

Today is the end of the month (sarcastic yay). So buckle up your belt and seat tight cos we gon be hustling today.

First, starting my morning with my usual EOD check, then here comes a few month-end tasks that I can think of on top of my head:

Opening/closing and rolling over period on all software for Sydney region and sending out email to relevant users.

Updating Translation ledgers.

Communicating with IT&S team to kick off the month-end process and sending month-end cut off email to Finance team (regarding adjustment journal management).

Running and distributing all dem reports to different departments:

  • Sending monthly Tax Export report and FBT report (from 1st April) to tax team; reconciling the figures and making sure to encrypt(!) the excel sheets.

  • Extracting queries for HR, BC and Ops teams, and sending them after month end process for them to reconcile.

13:00

Still at my desk, waiting for two data set to come in from the head office (HO). We (as in my team) need be the first one to let people know that the data is in, although people can check it on the system by themselves, so gotta refresh the dashboard until they are in. But banks are flexible on their lunch break so I can just have lunch later (being optimistic).

14:00

Now comes the harder tasks, like: preparing Tax Effect Accounting for non-quarter month end, then (the highlight of the month-end process) reconciling all of internal and group derivative and non derivative trades. This process requires you to go through countless excel spreadsheets and if you stuff up one sheet that means you are utterly screwed and need to redo the entire process (I'm happy for this process to be automated tbh). This will be sent to the HO so it needs to be done ASAP (considering the time difference between Sydney and Europe). The pressure is on.

16:30

My other senior skypes me to kick off bots. So I just find the specific robot he is looking for and click "start". You need to be vigilant when dealing with robots, especially when killing off a bot. If you kill off a wrong bot that messes up whatever they are doing and we definitely don't want that.

*Disclaimer: this may not be 100% accurate as it's been over half a year since I worked as an Assistant Systems Accountant.
